    • Our Story

    Borgo Finocchieto is a lovingly restored eight-hundred-year-old Tuscan village, with stunning views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and town of Buonconvento. In 2001, John Phillips, an American of Italian ancestry, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Italy from 2013-2017, purchased the property in 2001 and embarked on a fastidious eight-year renovation to restore Borgo Finocchieto to its original splendor. After many years of visiting the property, Danny Meyer, Founder of Union Square Hospitality Group in New York, became John’s partner and eventually its sole owner in 2025. Danny has continued to advance the mission of bringing groups together in a place of rare beauty, investing in the property, its culinary offerings and exceptional hospitality, preserving its unique character for years to come.

    Located on a rural hillside in the province of Siena, Borgo Finocchieto is situated directly along the historic Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome. The route connected the monastic stopovers of Monte Oliveto and Sant Antimo and likely hosted scores of pilgrims, merchants, and explorers for centuries. Down the road, you’ll find the town of Buonconvento – literally a “good gathering place” – which owes its existence to those traveling along the historic route in need of rest. Borgo Finocchieto's small piazza became a crossroads along the route, with daily exchanges between travelers and townspeople taking place for hundreds of years.
