Health & Recreation

Recreational facilities include a 60’ oval swimming pool, a state of the art fitness center, spa, tennis and basketball court, and bocce court.

Hiking & Biking
Finocchieto is ideally located as a base for hiking and biking excursions, as many excellent options extend immediately from our front door. From Finocchieto, a morning walk around local castles, the Ombrone river, and fields of grapevines can take as little as thirty minutes and as long as two hours. For those interested in covering a greater distance, we have assembled a collection of itineraries with maps, difficulty ratings, and suggested stopping points for beautiful vistas or regenerative meals. Explore on your own or let us arrange for a Sienese guide and hiking enthusiast who leads a day long “three castle walk” through the Val d’Orcia, among other itineraries. This is an excellent opportunity to explore Tuscany at your own pace.

The region south of Siena is frequented by bicycling outfitters like Backroads and Butterfields. We keep a variety of mountain bikes and equipment at your disposal. The road to Murlo, characterized by idyllic views and infrequent automobile traffic, takes approximately an hour round trip and makes a peaceful but active start to your day. For a greater challenge, use your bicycle to explore the surrounding hilltowns. For example, start the day with the challenging uphill climb to the monastery at Monte Oliveto, where you can take a breather in its cool cloisters. Next travel the short distance to the quaint hilltown of Chiusure, where you can dine al fresco at a local trattoria and use its elevated position to plot your course from Buonconvento. Then sail along winding roads through the clay hills of the Crete Senese to San Giovanni d’Asso. Wait out the afternoon sun in the Bosco della Ragnaia, artist Shepherd Craige’s Midsummer Night’s Dream of an Italian forest. Next travel downhill to Torrenieri, from which point you can: continue your course to San Quirico and Pienza, travel up the steep slope to Montalcino, or return to Finocchieto via the Via Cassia.

If you prefer an organized experience, several biking groups arrange day tours in the region, click here.

A Day At The Beach
Enjoy a Tuscan version of “A Day at the Beach” at La Valetta, located an hour’s drive from Borgo Finocchieto.

La Valetta, located on the magnificent Tyrrhenian Sea, is a privately owned beach with excellent facilities and food. It is a beautiful setting, and the little town of Castiglione della Pescaia is a great place to take a stroll and get an ice cream before heading back to the Borgo. We will be happy to arrange transportation, lunch and organize the private cabanas in advance. In addition to the complete amenities of La Valetta, we will provide our own beach/pool towels plus sporting equipment if you wish.

Hot Air Ballooning
Let Robert Etherington share his passion for ballooning over one of the world’s most beautifully refined landscapes. Leave directly from Finocchieto for a ride over the Sienese countryside. See Robert’s website.

Riding
Several nearby agrotourisms offer horseback tours around the Crete Senese and the hills and valleys surrounding Finocchieto. Let us know of your interest and we can make arrangements.

Massage
We can also arrange massages on site to ease travel weary muscles. Relax with your private view of the Tuscan hills before joining the group for apperitivi.
